Creating the blue screen for the backplates

Setting up backplates
Creating the characters

Setting up equipment
The equipment I used included a tripod, a camera, lights. Each were paramount to ensure my animation got finished. The camera I used ensured I got a series of images of my characters being moved. This makes the characters become animatted to look as if they are walking like real people. As I did a stop motion animation I needed to ensure that my camera didn't move as its important so the animation didn't loom jumpy. This is why I used a tripod to keep the camera steady to make my animation as smooth as it can possibly be. I used lights in order the box was lit up so I could get a good shot of what was inside so there was no shadow. Because I used three lights it ensures the full box was lit up therefore not casting shadows interrupting with my backgrounds. the equipment was set up this way as the camera and tripod gave me the perfect shot of the blue screen box with my characters in and the lights left no shadow meaning it won't show up on my animation.
Bellow are some pictures of me setting up the animation.
The above video shows me directing the voiceover crew. Here are two of my voiceover crew who did some of the voices I had a group of 7 people doing my voice overs to make it sound more crowded at Leicester Square they had different phrases and did lots of screaming and zombie noises to fit in with the animation. They watched it through whilst recording the sounds to make sure they had the correct audio and they knew what to say at certain times.
GANTT chart
I stuck to the GANNT in order for me to get my animation done I time. I worked through it and stuck to it therefore I got all my work finished for the deadline and ready for marketing soothe audience members can watch it and then feel enticed to go to the zombie march. Although I didn't include them, I had considered contingencies such as extra time for the production process as that was one of the most time consuming. Additionally, I had extra clay in case my models went missing/became damaged.
P6: Complete and edit the animation in line with the plan
Log sheet
Here is my log sheet which states what is involved in each of my shots I started, completed and rendered it swell as how long it is and how many shots it is I also make notes on what needs to be done. This helps me know where im up to and what I need to complete and start. This will ensure all of my work is completed and I can tick it all off when its finished. Therefore this would mean the animations finished.
Here is my timeline of my video and as shown the background is placed underneath the image. This is so that the characters are placed on top on the background rather than behind it so it can pick up the blue screen and look as if the characters are actually in Leicester square.

Here are my two transformations which are both fades. I went into transformations and dragged them into the the time-sequence. This then gave me a fade into the text shot about joining the zombie march and where it was. After that I dragged a fade out into a black screen which then looked more professional and therefore gave my animation a more smooth look to it.
Here is the end of my animation. It has changed from when I first started it as we can see the text shot was added in with the correct spelling as well as a voice over and the sponsorship logo on the screen. This made it look clean and smooth when transitioning as well as the fade out making it smooth till the very end. This is the comparison of both of the text shots and from this I can see I have improved it and made it better to look at for the audience. The use of blood dripping font also adds to the horror theme. In terms of sound, as you can see in the above screenshot I added that in. My earlier video of me directing the sound element evidences the different voiceovers, and I used these and layered up the files to create an appropriate atmosphere.
Changes I made during the process from the online edit to the final edit
My animation followed the storyboard but I gave it more detail. For example I showed people being killed in my animation on the platform but I did it in various places of the station such as the escalator hall as well. However, my animation pretty much followed every scene in the storyboard but each shot had the same time making it around 45 seconds. I did however cut out the clump of zombies as when creating them I thought it looked too small compared to the other people and zombies so I decided to keep it to three zombies and the green one being the main. From the offline edit it is shown the various scenes such as the the family members being killed by the three zombies. I added in voice overs to fill the empty space and make the animation sound more realistic as if the people are screaming to get away from the zombies. I changed my storyboard just a little because I added in a voice over which is one of they key conventions of an advert therefore it shows I'm marketing it correctly as well as making it entertaining for the audience.
M3-Optimise the content for use in the final animation
1st Animation - Original before optimisation
I exported my animation with these settings as an mov. file in order for the video to have a higher quality. This is because mov. files on phones give the animation a better quality and more clear therefore people can clearly see my animation and the backgrounds will be clearer making the animation look more realistic therefore it will be more enjoyable for the audience. This also makes it better quality on Apple devices and as I edited on a Mac it will give the video the true quality I will be able to see therefore showing me what the final product will look like. Quick Time movie player was used to view my video on Apple devices such as Macs. However I will need to export it so it is able to be shown on smartphones due to the fact that is what the brief States. To do this I need to change the settings to video code H.264 and then I will chose the devices that I want it to appear on which will be all phone devices including apple and and android devices. As shown below.
As you can see I exported my file as an MP4 and chose the devices that it will appear on. This shows I am following the brief as it states that the video needs to be able to be accessed on mobile devices therefore I chose both android and apple so everyone can access it. MP4 also ensures that the animation is in high quality for all phones. This differs to MOV which was only high quality for apple devices which wouldn't gain a wider target audience as only apple devices would be able to see it in high resolution therefore excluding a wide user base meaning they may not appear at the march which would be a downfall for my promotional animation. However By using the MP4 more people will see it with high quality meaning they will be more attracted to go to the march therefore making my promotional march a success. Because the video is now of standard size to be shown on mobile devices. This is the compressed video below.
Final animation converted
My final animation was changed from a moving image to a series of still images of the train coming in. This made the full video all stop motion while the previous version had the train moving from a video. This kept with the codes and conventions with stop motion animation. The video that was used of the train pulling in wasn't going to be in high resolution so I decided to put it into photos and therefore by having the sequence of images together making the train look as if its moving therefore when its exported it will be high resolution for all devices.
I feel it was a good idea to change it like this due to the fact it makes the whole animation stop motion instead of having some realistic videos and some stop motion so by having it all stop motion it makes it smoother and follows the codes and conventions of this style of animation. Because this size has been compressed in order to fit onto mobile phones by changing to still images rather than a video means the quality will be better.
I used bitmap images here because they are lower resolution therefore they reduce the file size so it can be exported much easier without taking a while to load. This will also load easily on the website when people watch it.
D2: Justify the choice of animation technique for the frame rate and duration
I chose to do a stop motion animation due to the fact it made the animation look animated in a different way to how animation is created today. Due to more modern technology animation is usually made by CGI so this will attract the older end of the target audience as when they used to watch programmes such as Wallace and grommit so it will remind them of this type of animation and they will be entertained by it. Because the brief is a target audience of adults it will make my animation a success at promotion. The use of stop motion also bring humour to my animation as the way they move wasn't like regular people would move so they way they moved would make people laugh. An advantage of doing stop motion is that it is cheap therefore we would be able to save money on the video and spend it on other promotional items such as posters and bus adverts.
The frame rate of my animation is 0.3 seconds per frame. This was a very suitable length for my frames due to the fact they flipped through them quick enough for the characters to look as if they were moving. However the images weren't too quick for people not to see what is happening therefore the animation looked smoothly edited and make the characters look as if they are moving at a suitable rate. The full length of the animation is 46 seconds which is a suitable length for my animation due to the fact it is an advertisement for the zombie march so between 30 and 50 seconds will induce the audience and not drag out the real message of the animation so they will be engaged all the way till the end. I had initially played around with a short FPS rate, but it looked far too jarring and not naturalistic at all. From my research, I wanted to emulate a similar style.

Audience Feedback
From my feedback I can see why my animation is fit for purpose. The use of humour enables people to enjoy the animation more and not lose interest. Because my animation was funny attracts a wider target audience for example. My brief states that it should be targeted towards horror enthusiast and the use of zombies killing people pinpoints this target audience and promote this march towards this audience. However the humour in this means more people will enjoy it as if I made it too scary some people wouldn't feel induced to eat h it therefore it would be a very niche product. However by making it more mainstream means more people will be joining the zombie march therefore making more revenue from this product. My animation was suitable for a gender of mostly male audience as I feel they would enjoy the violent killing more. Some woman may enjoy it however I feel that the viewers would be mostly male due to the violent gory scenes. I feel that my animation is suited to all races due to the fact I used a mixture of races when making my animation with a white family and a black family. This ensures I valued diversity in my animation therefore making everyone feel included and not only have a certain race that's left out. The Age for my target audience is adults who are around 20-35. My animation fit this target audience as I used a good ratio of horror and fear in order to reach that audience. I made the animation funny as it keeps people watching throughout and they won't get bored therefore selling the zombie march as fun and exciting as well as scary therefore more people will show up for it. The class this is aimed at is C1/C2. These grades are from the NRS Social grade system which Staes that its aimed towards upper and lower middle class people. This is due to the humour and the killing that the upper class may find disturbing and not funny due to their humour being different to the middle class people. I feel my animation is suitable for all ethnicities as we don't want to discriminate and we want to include everyone so my animation is aimed at all ethnicities and this should lead to more people coming to the Brain goo zombie march.
From my audience feedback I can see that they found my animation humorous but with a good ratio of horror. This means that the audience will watch the whole animation till the end as they find it enjoyable to watch as they are laughing but also on the edge of their seats at the horror of the zombies killing everyone. My audience felt that the animation had a good storyline and made sense as the animation is set in Leicester Square where the march is happening and the tube is an iconic part of London therefore making it clear that this animation is set in London and the uk audience will understand it as some have been brought up travelling on it. My feedback from my audience is that they found my animation interesting due to the fact it was stop motion which isn't an animation technique used as much today. They found that interesting because due to the fact my target audience is adults it will remind them of their youth by them watching animations such as Wallace and Grommit. This means they will feel; more enticed to watch my animation therefore keeping them interested till the end.
My animation was fit for purpose as I was asked to create a pro optional animation for BrainGoo UK for the zombie march happening in January. I used a popular style of animation when the adult target audience would have seen a lot when they were younger. At the end of my animation I put where the march was happening and in the corner I wrote sponsored by BrainGOO UK so my audience will know who its by. It fits the target audience well as my brief states this animation should be targeted at adults who are horror enthusiast. Therefore I made my animation gory and scary but also added humour to keep people watching and enjoyable therefore they will watch my animation through and more people will go to the zombie march. From this I have met my client brief therefore targeting the right audience and promoting BrainGOOS zombie march.

Creating the blue screen for the backplates

Setting up backplates
Here are some of the backplates I trialed for my animation to have in the background so it looks like the characters are in the location of Leicester Square tube station. This is done by Keying the original image and placing the backgrounds underneath the image so it will change the blue background to the image. I intend to use these backplates as they set the key scene in my animation of it being in the tube station at Leicester Square. I used different options to see which one would fit the screen right and not look blurry and pixilated when the charts are put on it.

Offline edit
I created an offline edit by which I just put in the images in order, and chroma keyed the back plates. I also started to play around with the frame rates so that I could start to see if the narrative was being portrayed realistically. The offline edit allowed me to spot any changes that were required and to also decide on transitions/text shots.
This is the transformation
.
When filming my animation I made a backplate with a blue screen. This is so I could edit any background onto it by keying it and placing the background underneath the image. On my timeline of the video I dragged and dropped it into it, placed the background underneath and then went to effects and clicked keying which I then dragged onto the image to that the image will take up anything blue and the characters would look as if they are there.
When adding in my images, I needed to ensure they were the same size as each other so that the animation didn't look jumpy as if the characters were growing and shrinking in size. I used the first image and transformed it into the size that looked proportional to the background and then I edited all
of the other images to look the same size.
Here are two gaps that I will be adding in a Tain pulling in and a voice over voice over that says 'please mind the gap' to show that the train is pulling up on the platform. I need to film and create the voice overs for this shot. The second gap is showing the doors opening of the train. I need to film this shot as I didn't have the resources at the time so I need to film that scene which will make my animation a few seconds longer.
Once I added in the gaps the animation made more sense and gave it a more realistic sense as we can see the doors opening and the zombie appearing. Here is what it looked like. I also added in a tube pulling into the station as it made more sense of what is happening to the audience therefore they will understand the storyline better and it makes the animation more realistic.

D2: Justify the choice of animation technique for the frame rate and duration

Does the audio sync?
|
To ensure the audio and the video match to make the animation make sense.
|
The audio matched with what the audience could see therefore it was the outcome I expected
|
Sam- The audio synced with the video correctly
Matti-Each sound was in the correct place making the animation make sense
|
Are the images on for a standard amount of time?
|
The images need to be on the screen for an amount of time to make them look as if they are moving.
|
The images were on the screen for a good amount of time that weren’t too short for people to not see what it was or too long to look like a photo rather than a video
|
Sam- Yes they weren't too quick so they looked as if they were walking
Matti-They were on for a good amount of time that wasn't too long to look like they were still images Max- The people and zombies looked like they were walking therefore they were on for the right amount of time. |
Does my animation follow the story board?
|
My animation should follow what I drew on the story board during pre-production.
|
My storyline stayed the same however certain sections had a little change to them however the storyline using the underground stayed the same.
|
Sam- The animation did follow the storyboard
Matti- Some aspects were included whereas others were left out Max- I could see the storyline was similar |
Did my animation follow my script?
|
Everything I wrote in my script was used in my animation.
|
I changed my animation from my script due to the fact it was getting difficult to film certain scenes such as the escalator scene and I also added in more dialogue.
|
Sam- Some aspects were followed some were changed
Matti- Some parts of the animation were left out however they were added in it many have made the animation too long Max- Some of the animation is shown in the script whereas parts such as dialogue was changed |
Does the animation suit the target audience?
|
My animation being suited for adults who are horror enthused.
|
My animation used more humour than horror to promote the animation. This may not appeal to the whole target audience however by using humour it will attract a wider audience.
|
Sam- Yes as the horror enthusiast will like the violence and gore
Matti- The adults will enjoy the humour in it making them want to watch more |
Were there any visual errors?
|
My animation will run smoothly without having any errors such as using the same image or putting one image on longer than the other.
|
There was only one small error which was the use of still images when the train came in as the last image didn’t get transformed so there was a bit of the black background in however it wasn’t a big mistake.
|
Sam- A couple of the images when the train was coming in weren't transformed correctly like they others
Matti- A couple of the images weren't transformed correctly Max- Only the images that weren't fully transformed otherwise no |
Was there a use of a main character?
|
The main character was the green zombie who will be used on other promotional materials for the march.

I used the green zombie and showed he was the main zombie by having him kill the first person and have him run up to the camera at the end. I also had him leading the crowed of zombies.
| Sam- I could tell the green zombie was the main character and will be used to promote the march due to the fact he had the most screen time Matti- The Green zombie was the main character as he lead most of the crowds Max- I can see that the green zombie was the main character as it did the most killing. |
